Can disabled people horse ride?
Disabled adults and children may be able to pay for their horse riding sessions from their personal budget (Direct Payments) or from short breaks schemes operated by their local social services.
What do riding for the disabled do?
When riding, the movement of the horse allows the pelvis, spine and associated muscles to work together as they would when walking. The rhythm of the ride relaxes tight, stiff muscles, improves core strength, co-ordination and balance – providing important therapy to people with a physical disability.
How many RDA groups are there?
RDA is divided into 18 Regions and 61 Counties.
Can wheelchair users ride horses?
In order to get on the horse, you’ll need a mounting block or mounting platform. They are available in various sizes, and some have ramps for wheelchair users. Another safety precaution is having one person lead the horse, and another person walk along the side of the horse to help a rider with balance issues.

Who started RDA?
RDA (NSW) History Riding for the Disabled Association (NSW) was formed after Pearl Batchelor AOM visited Riding for the Disabled Association in England in the early 1970s. With the combined interest and commitment of Pearl Batchelor and Nan Everingham the inaugural meeting was held on 23 October 1972.
How do you mount a horse in a wheelchair?

- Lock the wheelchair in place.
- Unbuckle the rider from the wheelchair.
- Put the arm hooks under the rider’s armpits first.

What is hippotherapy good for?
Hippotherapy has been used to treat patients with neurological or other disabilities, such as autism, cerebral palsy, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, head injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, behavioral disorders and psychiatric disorders.
How old do you have to be to volunteer at the RDA?
We welcome volunteers of 12 and over, there is no upper age limit and we need a wide range of skills – not just with horses. RDA is a diverse organisation and we are at our best when we bring together people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.
Can a person with a disability ride a horse?
Riding for the Disabled can provide exciting opportunities and challenges for people interested in volunteering. You do not have to have experience with horses to assist at an RDA centre, training is given in regards to both horse skills and supporting the riders.
