A relocation occurs when you move to another city or state for a job and must leave behind your present life: your home, family, friends and your church. People relocate for jobs every day for a variety of reasons. A relocation takes a lot of thought and planning.

Why do people move from jobs to jobs?
The number one reason people change jobs, according to a survey of more than 10,000 people who just did, is for career advancement. Fundamentally, job switchers are most typically people who saw their job as a dead end, so they left it for one that offered a chance to grow.

To understand the bigger picture, we looked to the demographics, starting with age. We found that most who moved for work ranged between the ages of 25 and 34 (40.2%), followed by those aged 18 to 25 (28.9%), many of which include new graduates who took their first jobs in new locations, far from hometowns and family.

The study found men are by far more willing to move for jobs. Even after I controlled for job titles, education, and age, men were about 3.3 percentage points more likely to be applying to a job in another metro compared to women.

Our survey also indicated that people relocate to take jobs with companies of all sizes, from small businesses to large corporations. The largest percentage of people who moved relocated to work with companies of 1-49 employees (22.1%).
